or its first 2019 edition, the Maison & Objet trade fair met the daring challenge of opening its range to encompass three key areas: Home, Objects and Luxury, Design and Interior Architecture. The aim: make it easier to cross from one sector to another and adapt to changing consumption habits. The trade fair’s renewal was particularly well-received in the “Objects” section, whose staging allowed visitors to get a better grasp of the entire range. Beyond the practical aspect, these changes come from a need to diversify the multi-product offers to meet retailers’ and customers’ demands, in line with international market expectations.
This season, the spotlights on Germany via designer Sebastian Herkner, China and Ukraine, represented a true invitation to explore new design territories. We drew inspiration from this multicultural, blended patchwork of ideas, halfway betweenlocal craftsmanshipand innovative modernism. Among these creative destinations, Asia in particular grabbed our attention. Its influence can be felt throughout our ENVIRONMENTS & DESIGN FW 20-21trend book.
The work of Sebastian Herkner, star designer of M&O 2019, is also felt in the trends highlighted in our book. He gathers inspiration from the cultures, art forms, and color harmonies he encounters during his travels. He then combines these elements, illustrating his creative method which lies between tradition and design, technology and craftsmanship. He takes care to develop objects that will last throughout the years. According to Sebastian Herkner, “It’s important these daystosustain and reanimate craftsmanship because it carries a culture’s legacy.” He adds, “Today, people will spend more on an object that can become a companion for life.”Two major trends confirm key themes from our ENVIRONMENTS & DESIGN FW 20-21 trend book.
